Registration as a Professional Biologist in the Alberta Society of Professional Biologists requires minimum levels of professional experience. As an applicant to become a Professional Biologist, you must have at least 12 months experience, preferably continuous, in the biological sciences, and should have displayed a substantial leadership role in three or more of the following areas: training, advising, evaluating, interpreting, inventorying, researching, reporting, and/or managing the biological sciences and/or applications of those sciences.
Normally, no more than an 18-month break between the last date of relevant professional experience and the date of application will be acceptable for registration as a Professional Biologist. You do not need to be a resident of Alberta to apply for membership and professional experience gained outside of Alberta will be considered.
Biologists with less than the above professional experience are encouraged to apply as a Biologist-In-Training (BIT). Upon completion of the prerequisite work experience, application to become a Professional Biologist may then be made.
